Opal is hydrated silicon dioxide, sometimes containing the minerals cristobalite and tridymite. As an amorphous, water-containing stone, it does not crystallize. Opal comes in many colors with or without the play of color, which is caused by silica spheres of varying size being closely packed together. As the solidification of a silica gel, it is generally found in seams of veins, but more rarely it is found in massive form exhibiting botryoidal growth, in stalagmitic form, or as a replacement pseudomorph in fossils.
